23Housing Group Wins State Award for Nonprofits

BY MARK WINEKA
SALISBURY POST

October 23, 2003

The Salisbury Community Development Corp. received accolades Tuesday for winning a recent state award for nonprofit organizations.

Salisbury City Council recognized the Development Corp.'s board, staff and programs for winning the N.C. Center for Nonprofits' 2003 Stewards Award.

Mayor Susan Kluttz said the honor, presented at a recent luncheon in Winston-Salem, was not a housing award but an award for being a good nonprofit organization.

The mayor said she had never known a more enthusiastic board and staff or a group that cares as much for its community.

The city helped to revive the Community Development Corp. five years ago, and Chanaka Yatawara has served as executive director since its rebirth. The nonprofit's home ownership program includes new construction, acquisition and rehabilitation of existing homes, down payment assistance and a home buyer education program.

The Development Corp. built its first new homes in 1999 on North Shaver Street and has concentrated much of its latest new construction efforts in the Jersey City neighborhood. The new homes include computer centers and discounted Internet service.

Extensive public and private partnerships have combined to make the homes affordable for first-time homebuyers. The buyers must complete an education program, contribute at least $750 toward a down payment and meet certain income guidelines.

Lou Adkins, community development coordinator for the Community Development Corp., recently has helped the United Way in counseling unemployed people who face mortgage concerns because of layoffs. She estimates she's helped roughly 70 people.
